Source: Alarms, overdoses and saving lives: 48 hours in UK’s first drug injection room – BBC News
The UK’s first drug consumption room, The Thistle in Glasgow, is providing supervised spaces for people to inject drugs safely under medical supervision. In its first 12 weeks, the centre has seen 180 visitors and supervised over 1,200 injections of heroin and cocaine, with staff intervening in 16 overdose incidents. Two recent overdoses, involving men in their 30s, were reversed using Naloxone, highlighting the facility’s role in preventing deaths. Service manager Lynn Macdonald emphasized that without The Thistle, these individuals might not have survived. The centre also aims to reduce drug-related harm, limit the spread of blood-borne viruses, and clean up drug debris in the local area. One user, David Clark, credited the service with helping him access housing and begin his journey toward recovery. Click here to apply.
